Flap Operation

Flap Operation

Flap operation is applied in cases where bone destruction progresses in order to directly intervene in the bone under the gum and to eliminate the pockets formed.

Gum pockets; are areas that cannot be cleaned and where harmful bacteria grow, which are located below the gum line and where the gum tissue begins to separate from the tooth. If left untreated, the bacteria in these areas cause inflammation and conditions such as tenderness, bleeding, pain, and damage to bone tissue may occur. The purpose of the flap operation is to destroy the pockets that have formed in the gums and to restore the periodontal ligaments and bone tissue that have been lost due to inflammation.

    How is flap operation performed?

Flap operation is usually performed under local anesthesia. During the operation, the gingival tissue is removed, the pockets are eliminated, bone irregularities are eliminated, and if necessary, the losses in the bone are eliminated with appropriate biomaterials. After the infected tissues are cleaned and bone losses are eliminated, the gum is closed again.

What should be considered after flap operation?

It will take 1-2 weeks for the patient to recover after the flap operation. After the flap operation, redness, tenderness and swelling may be seen in the gums for up to 10 days. In order to reduce these complaints, the medicines prescribed by the physician should be used regularly and hard, hot and cold foods should be avoided. Again, smoking and alcohol should not be consumed during this period.
