What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis, also known as gingivitis, is a gum problem that occurs as a result of dental plaque accumulated on the teeth irritating the gums. Since it is the initial stage of gum diseases, early diagnosis and treatment is very important. Gingivitis left untreated at this stage can progress and lead to serious periodontal problems. To prevent gingivitis, regular and effective tooth brushing and oral care are essential. In case of adverse conditions such as swelling in the gums, bleeding in the gums during tooth brushing or bad breath, a dentist should be consulted as soon as possible.

Gingivitis occurs when sufficient attention is not paid to oral and dental care. Infections in the gums due to some systemic diseases or malnutrition are also among the factors that cause gingivitis. Gingivitis is an infection caused by bacteria. Depending on the severity of inflammation, it may cause pain. When gingivitis is noticed at the initial stage, it heals with adequate oral hygiene. However, if care is not taken, it can cause serious problems.

What are the symptoms of gingivitis?

Gingivitis often goes unnoticed in its initial stages. As gingivitis progresses, symptoms appear. The most common symptoms of gingivitis are:

*Gum recession,

* Bleeding in gums while brushing teeth,

*Swelling, redness, tenderness in the gums

*Pain while chewing or speaking,

*Sensitivity to hot or cold,

*Bad odor in mouth,

* Loose teeth,

*White inflammation.

What are the causes of gingivitis?

When food residues cannot be cleaned well, they accumulate in the pocket between the teeth and gums and form a layer of bacterial plaque, which we call dental plaque. This layer of plaque puts pressure on the gums, causing gingivitis. Although the biggest cause of gingivitis is bacterial plaque, we can list other causes as follows:

*Smoking,

*Pregnancy,

*Some systemic diseases,

*Diabetes,

genetic factors,

*Use of systemic drugs that affect the gums,

* Structural disorders in teeth,

*Old fillings that are broken or need to be replaced.
